Ten centuries of architecture
Rare are the cities that can boast with such diversity
in architecture. Arranging the styles in a line, we create history. Because
each period speaks for itself - about lifestyle, way of thinking, values
of the people of that period. Architecture is not only the materials that
the windows, doors and walls are made from. Architecture reflects the
mood, the atmosphere of the period in which it came about. The buildings
in a city tell us about their inhabitants; whether they were happy, sad,
rich, poor, whether they lived in fear or carelessly… Therefore
it is not surprising when we say that each city has a soul. Prague has
opened to show us its.
We depict the artistic periods through time.
Gothic
Baroque
Classicism

Modern architecture - sample period description
The most significant example of the modern architecture
in the Czech republic is the Dancing House, known in public as Ginger
and Fred. Its building begun in the end of the 1992 and caused numerous
controversies both in the artistic circles and in the public. It was erected
next to the river between the houses that mostly date from the end of
the 19th ct. The house next to it was built by Havel's grandfather, and
the President lived here for the first two years of his term. This bold
building is work of a Croatian architect Vlado Milunic and of an American
architect Frank Gehry who among other things designed the Guggenheim Museum
in Bilbao.
The nickname Ginger and Fred came about due to the
cylindrical shape of the façade that looks like the famous dancing
couple; glass, see-through and lighter structure represents a woman leaning
onto a more stable body made of concrete, a man. The windows on the main
façade are distributed unevenly and thus contribute to the movement
of the whole structure.
Each of the tours features a quiz where you can
test your knowledge, and a whole lot of interesting facts.
