For our Internet visitors we have taken a description
of one of the most beautiful Istrian towns from the Multmedia Postcard
Istra® - Istrian Towns section:
UMAG
Umag, roman Umacus, is positioned in the farthest
northwest of the Croatian part of Istra. It used to stretch over
two islands. One was sunken by the sea, while the romans connected the
other island with mainland and fortified it with walls.
   Today it is a peninsula
in which the old town core with its web of narrow streets and partially
preserved town walls indicates about its medieval look. On the very south
shore of the town there is a church of st. Pelegrin from the 12 th ct.
with organs from Venetian Dalmatian type from 1776. Umag is othervise
known as cofounder of the action for protection and restoration of istrian
organs. Parish church of Mary's Assumption dates back to 1757 and it was
built in place of an older chursh from the 15th ct. There is a relief
plate from the 14th ct. built into its outer wall representing st. Pellegrin,
the protector of the town. North of the town there is cape Savudrija,
the most western part of Croatia with the renowned and the oldest lighthouse
in Croatia (put up in 1826).
   There is an interesting
historical event related to this area that took place near former Roman
settlement Sipar. In 1177 the Venetians shattered crusaders' ships and
the battle served as a motif for Tintoretto to make a composition that
is the Doge's palace in Venice. Let's just mention that Umag is known
for hosting the ATP tournament, first in this part of Europe. During July
when the tournament is being held, the town becomes a gathering place
of the world's jet set.

that accompany the text about Umag in the Istrian Towns section of the
